What is futsal?

Futsal is the FIFA-recognised form of small-sided indoor football (the word is a contraction of the Spanish ‘futbol sala’). It is played between two teams who each have five players on the pitch at any one time, with rolling substitutes and a smaller ball than soccer that is harder and less bouncy.

The small amount of space means that players must have great technique and skill, and as well as a professional sport in its own right with national and international championships, it is also considered a development tool for 11-aside football.

Don’t just take our word for it…

“Futsal has been very important in my life. In developing my technique, quick thinking, short movements. I think futsal is fundamental in a footballers career. It was very important in mine”.

— Neymar

“I played futsal growing up…you need to think quick and play quick so it’s easier for you when you move to normal football.”

— Pele

“When I was a young boy in Argentina, I played futsal in the street and in a club. It was great fun and helped me to become the player I am today.”

— Messi

“In futsal, you see whether a player is really talented. You notice the small details in quality, class and tactical understanding.”

— Xavi

“Futsal is an excellent way for children to develop their skills and understanding of the game. My technique and my dribbling skills came from playing futsal.”

— Ronaldinho

“During my childhood in Portugal, all we played was futsal. The smaller court helped my futsal skills. The nature of the game made me feel so free when I played. If it wasn’t for futsal I would definately not be the player I am today.”

— Ronaldo
